The World in Full Bloom: A very snug garden

Truthfully, I never thought I would make plans to visit Staten Island, but after reading about Egger’s Ice Cream Parlor, I had to visit someday. Plans came together when the location on Snug Harbor’s Cottage Row was open for a monthly event.

I’ve read about the county museum and gardens, but I did not expect the gardens to be this lush. Then again, it’s spring.

I can easily identify peonies, daffodils and tulips — but the white flowers on the trees, they’re new to me. Not to mention, these are gorgeous. The wow factor was the view of the trees hanging above the lake. It’s like a scene from a fairytale.

Actually, that would not be a far-off description. If I’m not mistaken, there was a castle-like tower, and that tower had a sign on it alluding to the name of the garden being some sort of “secret garden.”

The garden may be a secret kept from those who don’t know Staten Island very well — or don’t plan on visiting due to the location being out of the way for those in northern parts of the city. But I think this garden is out and proud, based on how lively its plants are.

Bonus: A dandelion by the sidewalk outside the park’s walls. The location reminded me of the scene in “The Sound of Music” in which Julie Andrews sings “I Have Confidence.”
