Eleventh-hour sports graphics for February

Rather than dedicating four posts to discuss the sports graphics I made for The Ticker’s business section, here is a round of the graphics I made within three days.

Because of the public domain lacked tasteful photos to the sports editor’s taste, several requests were made to the graphics team for the section. Unfortunately, the team was suffering a shortage of artists. There were only two of us who could draw realistic humans, me and the news editor. We both scrambled to contribute graphics while also taking care of our editing assignments.

This graphic was produced for an article about basketball player Cam Thomas’s role as the Brooklyn Nets’ next big star. This was the first of the four I’d produce, so I had the time and energy to add detail to Thomas’ clothes and the basketball. I liked how the background turned out.

This graphic was produced for an article about why LeBron James is considered the greatest basketball player of all time. I rushed to produce this graphic a few hours before the newspaper files were sent to the printer. The photo of James sitting in a throne I used for reference had him shirtless, so I did my best to illustrate a jersey and matching shorts on him. The crown was meant to be drawn in a graffiti style. Had I had more time, I would have added detail to the shorts and corrected the placement of the logo on the jersey.

This graphic was produced for an article about Kevin Durant being acquired by the Phoenix Suns. I originally drafted a graphic with line art on the Wednesday before production closed but trashed it after another artist was tapped to take it on last minute. When that graphic was sent the following day, the sports editor was not satisfied by it because it the artist’s version of Durant didn’t look like Durant himself, so I did this graphic the following day. I had time since the graphic wasn’t being used in the print version of the newspaper. I enjoyed illustrating the Arizonan desert. I improvised with the jersey, but I still like how it turned out.

This graphic was produced for an article about the New York Jets’ leading players. This was the last graphic I produced, so for lack of energy on a Friday evening, I only drew outlines of the players against a green background.

As a bonus, here’s a last minute graphic I produced for The Ticker’s science and technology section for an article that discusses ChatGPT. Because taking a screen capture of the artificial intelligence program’s website and using it as an article graphic was a gray zone for the masthead staff, I made this graphic of the program’s webpage.
