Starting a new SPJ chapter

I am glad to announce that the Society of Professional Journalists voted to approve a new student chapter at Baruch College.

The vote comes months in the making. Since late last year, younger members — in other words, non-senior members and the editor-in-chief — of The Ticker, the college’s independent undergraduate student-run newspaper, have been organizing to form one. The idea was conceived when editor-in-chief Amanda Salazar and news editor Emanuela Gallo went to a workshop about forming more student chapters.

Journalism professor Emily Johnson signed on to be the group’s advisor.

In February, a few of us Ticker members needed to sign on to tentative chapter roles just for the vote, hence why the graduating editor-in-chief could sign on as the president for this occasion. Also signing on were third-level copy editor Dani Heba for vice president, third-level copy editor Maya Demchak-Gottlieb for treasurer and me, The Ticker’s business editor, for secretary.

I’m all for student journalism — heck, I noted in paperwork that I lobbied for the protection of it at the New York State Legislature — but my main motivation for signing on was to write the minutes for meetings and organizing information and data.

Writer Mia Gindis signed on in April to be the public relations manager for the chapter, and all we needed to do left was submit paperwork for the vote.

Given Salazar’s graduation, Heba will take over as president while the us other three retain our positions. The vice president position is still open, but it may be snagged soon by another young and promising writer.
