In Flushing Meadows-Corona Park, the Unisphere was built for the 1969 New York World’s Fair. In Heysel Plateau, the Atomium was built for the 1958 Brussels World’s Fair.
Unlike the Unisphere, the Atomium has tiny versions of itself sold at souvenir shops. It’s one symbol of Brussels, aside from the Pissing Mannequin and Town Hall. What can be said about both structures is that they symbolize innovation in science, and we still build on those innovations today.
