Tanabata in Kappabashi

Taken: 7 July 2019

I unintentionally started a “Best of 2019” theme this week, but tomorrow’s post won’t be from 2019.

I rarely take horizontal photos to keep with journalistic standards, but a horizontal frame works here. How else would I be able to capture Tokyo Skytree in its entirety?

It was Tanabata, the one day in the year Orihime and Hikoboshi are able to meet from other sides of the Milky Way Galaxy according to Chinese legend. It’s a holiday associated with wishes — those colorful strips of paper have wishes written on them and are hung on bamboo.

I don’t think I wrote something that year, but I did at Tokyo Station for 2018. After the festival, I went around the kitchen appliance shops in Kappabashi, acquired an okonomiyaki keychain, and had bread at a cafe. I didn’t get to try anything from the stalls, but they did look delicious.
